Storm damage: where to start
Quick answers
Does homeowners insurance cover hail damage in North Carolina?
Most homeowners policies cover sudden wind and hail damage, subject to your deductible, which may be a separate wind/hail deductible. Wear and age are generally not covered, and some policies pay only actual cash value on older roofs. How claims work.
What should I do first after a storm damages my roof?
Stay safe, photograph the damage before cleanup, cover openings with a tarp, check your deductible, then call your insurer. Photo checklist.
Who pays when a tree falls on my house?
Usually your own homeowners insurance, even if it was the neighbor's tree, when wind or another covered peril knocked it down. Tree on roof.
Can a roofer handle my insurance claim?
Only you, or a licensed public adjuster you hire, should negotiate the claim itself; ask any contractor who offers to do it whether they hold a public adjuster license.
How do I check a roofer's license?
North Carolina has no separate state license for roofers on smaller jobs. A general contractor license from the NC Licensing Board for General Contractors is required when the total cost of a project is $40,000 or more (G.S. 87-1), and roofing work at that size falls under the board's building, residential, or specialty roofing classifications. Below that amount, ask for proof of liability insurance and workers' compensation, and check the local building permit office. License lookup.

Why this site exists
After a storm, people in Greensboro and the Piedmont Triad search for the same things: whether hail hit their street, what their insurance will cover, and who to call. RoofingGreensboro.com puts official weather data, plain-English insurance guidance sourced from the North Carolina Department of Insurance and other official sources, and a local roofing directory in one place. It is published by HERE City, the company behind HERE Greensboro. It is not a contractor and does not sell roofs, insurance or leads to homeowners.
